The conditional expression is meant as the modern variant of the [[commands:classictest | classic test command]]. Since it is **not** a normal command, Bash doesn't need to apply the normal commandline parsing rules like recognizing ''&&'' as [[syntax:basicgrammar#lists | command list]] operator.
